Abstract  The study and protection for traditional villages are very important for us to protect our Chinese historical and cultural heritage. For this reason, the article takes the 156 traditional villages in Shanxi province as research objects and the ArcGis10.2 as support platforms to analyze the distribution of the traditional villages in Shanxi province from macro perspectives by spatial analysis and multivariate statistics. Because of its tattered landform, Shanxi province has been called "a region which has surrounding river and the mountains inside". The traditional villages are widely distributed and mostly are well-preserved. Most traditional villages are cohesive and the rest are dispersing type; the regional distribution is not in the balance for the majority of the villages are located in the middle and the southeast of the Shanxi province while other places have a few traditional villages. Those traditional villages become a zonal distribution along the river or the roads. In the meantime, the distributions along the river and the roads maintain consistency when it comes to directivity. Nowadays, Shanxi province faces with the predicament of economy downturn due to the coal economy' recession in recent years. The government had put forward the "Poverty Relief In An AppropriateWay" to help Shanxi province to get out of the trouble. However, it's ability cannot equal to the government's ambition. Viewed from this angle, the research for effective patterns of traditional villages'protection and exploitation plays a crucial role on the development of "Poverty Relief In An AppropriateWay ".
